On Wednesday 4th September 2019, the ‘Aqra fis-Sajf’ Summer Reading Campaign came to a close, and a final reading celebration for young students took place at The Point, Sliema.
The National Literacy Agency, together with Agenda Bookshop, organised this event to encourage children to read books from a young age. This activity formed part of the UNESCO International Literacy Day celebrations, which was celebrated internationally on Sunday, 8th September 2019. The theme for this year is ‘literacy and multilingualism’. The story-telling exercises were lead by x4 Reading Ambassadors: Gilbert Agius, Carmel Busuttil, Saviour Darmanin and Antonia Micallef. Other activities included a Maltese classic-inspired dance-a-long show and balloon-making to wrap up a memorable day for the children.
Over 60 children from schools around Malta were present for this event, and Agenda Bookshop, as the main sponsor of this event, sponsored each student with a free goodie bag and a book, in order to inspire children to fall in love with reading.
