The draws for the Wilkinson Sword Waterpolo Winter League organised by the Aquatic Sports Association of Malta (ASA) were held today (12 April 2007) at the National Pool Complex in Gzira. This year’s participating teams are Neptunes Vodafone, Sliema MacDonald’s, Sirens, and San Giljan Zara. The Youth National Team will also be playing against all the participating teams.
The league will be played on a two round robin system (as per schedule attached). A detailed schedule of matches is also available on the ASA website www.asaofmalta.org.
“The original idea behind the Winter League was to organise waterpolo matches for the top teams who would have been training for months, gearing them up for the forthcoming Wilkinson Sword National Water Polo Championship,” said ASA President Robert Ebejer. “Thanks to the support of our sponsors Wilkinson Sword and the media for the exposure it gives to this competition which is still relatively new, the Winter League is gaining popularity and momentum to eventually be considered as a major competition in the future.”
“This year, the Youth National Team will be participating in the European Youth Championships in September, so the Winter League should also be a good learning curve for them to benefit from the necessary experience and match practice they will gain playing against Malta’s top waterpolo teams.”
“Our commitment to support Malta’s most talented waterpolo players is yielding results,” said Simon Debono, Marketing Manager of Miller Distributors Limited, local agents and distributors for Wilkinson Sword. “It is indeed encouraging to see that waterpolo in Malta is reaching new and interesting heights and the Association’s ambitions to continue to grow professionally in this sport are becoming concrete realities even beyond our shores. This is in line with Wilkinson Sword’s philosophy to contribute towards such a winning formula.”
Wilkinson Sword, established in 1772, are manufacturers of reputable and innovative razors and blades. As official sponsors of the ASA, they support all the national waterpolo competitions over three years.
